Dear Paxton:
Memories of Cole flashed across her memory, bringing a heaviness to the pit of her stomach. She quickly dismissed the feelings, telling herself that she was better off without a man like Cole. She had Joe to spend time with now, yes it was different, more like a brotherly relationship, but she was not alone.
As if Joe were inside her thoughts, the phone rang. It was Joe wanting to take Lisa out to dinner and a movie at Santa Monica Marketplace. She agreed to go.

Cole said, “How come you have put up with me all these years? Why do you love me so much?”
“Honey, what’s the matter?”
“Just answer my question. Why do you love me so much when I have treated you like such crap over the years?” Cole asked.
Lisa said, “I love you because I know who you really are. I know you love me. My family may not see that love and tenderness, but I do. I am the only one who really knows who you are, on the inside.”
She said, kissing his mouth. “Yes, you may have hurt me badly in the past, but I truly believe that is past now. So, it was worth the wait.”

Lisa’s stomach dropped, seeing the red light blinking on her answering machine, next to her bed. Reluctantly, she pressed the play button, waiting for the message recorder to blare out the voice, into the still room. She scolded herself for praying that it would be Cole.
