KODAK

Poem by:  Paxton Wilkinson

I am washed away into a whirlpool of death.

I was in a merciless hurtful daze.

I heard my dad yell my mom’s name,

and I dizzily walked out of my room.

I gazed down at the blood drops on the floor.

     I screamed twice.

Two high pitched ear piercing screams.

At first I thought it was my dad that had gotten hurt,

but then screaming thoughts raced through my mind.

KODAK!  My poor puppy, only 6 months old.

Gallons of tears streamed down my face.

          Is this a dream?

We speed down the road, driving to the vet.

My dad’s assurances warmed my heart.  Hope swelled through my body.

But… No!  There was no hope; she was gone.

     And what I experienced after

that is yet to haunt my soul with sorrow.

The PitBull

Ms. Mandi’s Blog

Did you know that the term “pitbull” is slang?  “Pit” references back to the late 1800′s in Europe when this breed was trained for fighting in the pits with another “pitbull” to their death.  During these fights only one dog was the winner and the other was tossed aside dead or to die while bleeding to death.  The term “bull” refers to the Bulldog breed.  A “pitbull” was evolved by crossing an American Bulldog and a Terrier.  The bulldog in those days isn’t the same breed as the bulldog today.  The technical name for this breed of “pitbull” is Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Staffordshire American Bull Terrier, American Bull Terrier, and Staffordshire Terrier.  Each variation has its differences in size and slight appearance differences.

Why do I mention this?  I am mentioning this breed because I have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier; from this point  I will refer to him as Bowzar.  His is my best friend and one of the best dogs I’ve ever known and or have had the pleasure of owning.  He’s gentle, so smart, and makes me laugh.  This is more than I can say about a lot of humans I know:/

This morning has been a rough one for me, not feeling particularly cheery by any means.  I was sitting on my bed feeling sorry for myself while having a good and needed cry when he jumped up on the bed and nestled his nose into my ear.  I might add that it was a very cold and wet nose at that.  He made me laugh, but he wasn’t laughing, he had sadness in his eyes.  He was looking back at me the same way that I was feeling inside.  He understood that I was feeling sad and came to me on his own to let me know that he understood.  He understood that I was feeling sad without any words or explanations on my part.  Who can we say in our lives who can understand our feelings without any words?  Not many people have this kind of connection with another human being, but animals do.

I know “pitbulls” have a bad wrap.  Trust me, if I saw a “pitbull” in a dark alley, I would pee my pants.  I’m not here to say that they are all good, by any means.  Over the years different breeds have gotten a bad wrap; the Doberman Pinscher, the Chow, the Rottweiler.  It is just like some people are good and some are bad, the same with animals.  They are the product of their owners. What I am saying is “not to judge a book by its cover”.  Bowzar was raised with lots of love and he returns the love to us.  He is a good boy and I am lucky to have him. It’s not the breed that is bad; it’s their reputation.

P.S.  Speaking of which, Bowzar just came up to me as I ‘m sitting at my desk typing and nudged my leg with his nose, letting me know that he is here and thinking of me……. .

Four New Government Programs to Keep Your Home

18 Friday Nov 2011

I just found this wonderful  website that has four new programs for California homeowners to help them keep their home from going into foreclosure.

http://www.keepyourhomecalifornia.org/programs.htm

1.  Unemployment Mortgage Assistance (UMA)

2.  Mortgage Reinstatement Assistance Program (MRAP)

3.  Principal Reduction Program (PRP)

4.  Transition Assistance Program (TAP)

Check the website out.  The programs are well-rounded and covers different problem areas with people who are in danger of losing their home.  It’s worth a try.

Is it Worth the Fight?

18 Friday Nov 2011

Do we fight harder to keep something we love or do we fight harder to get out of something we hate?

I remember when I first started college out of high school and my dad said that he would pay for my education, room, and board.  Did I appreciate it since it was handed to me rather than having to work for it myself?

I did not, but this is only my opinion based on my real life experiences.

Later, I dropped out and wanted to go to modeling school instead; he refused to pay.  I was devastated, but I worked really hard at a bakery, saving every penny I earned.  By the end of the summer, I had saved enough money and paid my own way through modeling school.  Did I appreciate this more than when it was handed to me?  Yes, I believe in my situation I did.  I graduated from the program, and worked some as a model.

To make my point…… It seems to be that when things are handed to us, it is easier to put the fight off until a more “convenient” time.  However, when push comes to shove and we are fighting for our very survival and what is rightfully ours, then our instincts tend to come out with our claws and we fight harder for what we want to keep.

Sometimes we have to get dirty and it isn’t always perfect, but is it worth the fight?  It is if you believe in it.

I just found out that another friend of mine’s house went into foreclosure.  When is this madness going to end?  More jobs being lost equals more foreclosures.

Starting Your Own Business in this Economy

16 Wednesday Nov 2011

Posted by Ask Ms Mandi in Just a PERFECT Thought

We are living in a tough economy.  Employers have the upper-hand while unemployment rates rise.  Many people are finding themselves unemployed.  It doesn’t matter who you are, you may find yourself at “The Unemployment Office”.  You may be a single mother struggling to get a job at the local super market.  You may be a high school dropout looking for a job.  You may even be a college graduate with a Master’s Degree going to a fast food restaurant for work.  Unemployment does not discriminate.  Unemployment is everywhere and it takes down all kinds.

The employer has the upper-hand in this economy.  Having a Master’s Degree does not mean that you are going to get the top paying position.  In theory, a Master’s Degree may hinder you, since companies are hiring people with skills at “entry-level positions” in order to save a buck.  Some companies are even hiring people on provisional status without any benefits, to see “how it works out”.  The employer has the upper-hand.

What is a person to do?  They say that a person on average may be unemployed for at least a year.  They also say that in order to get the job, you will have to take a dramatic pay cut in salary.  Can we afford, as an economy to wait a year to be employed again?  Will our mortgage wait for us to catch up, while we collect our unemployment checks that just cover the mortgage bills to survive?  Or will our bill collectors wait for us to find a job, in a year, while we pay our mortgage payment? Will our economy survive more foreclosures as more people are losing their homes?  The most difficult question is, should I pay for my mortgage or food and electricity?  Those are some difficult decisions to make, especially when you have children in the home that are counting on “you” to make everything okay.

One of the saddest stories I’ve heard was when a mother of two couldn’t afford to buy her children Christmas presents.  She didn’t know what to do, when her little girl came up to her and said, “It’s okay mommy.  You don’t have to buy me any presents this year, Santa will.”  How do you explain that to a 6-year-old?

What I’m trying to say is, “If you can’t beat them, join them?”  When nobody hires you, start-up your own company.  You’re probably saying, “Right! And how am I supposed to get the money to do that?”  Good point, especially since the banks are not giving out loans to small businesses, unless you have perfect credit, but let’s face it, if you have been unemployed for a while, you probably don’t have the best credit score.

I don’t have all the answers, but I do know that this is the time to do so.  If the Government wants to help, they need to help the small business’ owners and stop giving all the money to Corporate America.  I see their point, trust me, but they don’t see ours from down here.  We are living in the economic hardship, Corporate America is just reading about it.

The only way to make a difference is to stand up and fight back, don’t lay down and die.  The more voices that are heard, the better the chances are to changing things.  Let our Government know.  Support small business’.
