Happy Memorial Day! Memorial Day marks the official beginning of summer. Summer time in the sun; laying out by the pool, swimming at the beach, BBQ’s, and long, warm evenings. It is a time of relaxation and a chance for new memories to be created. Children are out to play and graduation for Seniors is just around the corner.

Congratulations to all the Seniors of 2013, wishing you much prosperity for your future endeavors.

What is Spice?

Drugs, Marijuana, Potpourri, Spice, Teenagers

What is Spice? I have heard some talk about this new “synthetic marijuana”. Let me first say, I am completely anti-marijuana and anti any drug. I have known close friends that have fallen into terrible addictions caused by marijuana and other harder types of drugs. So, when I heard about this drug called Spice, I decided to do some research.

First off, it is basically just potpourri or incense. Who in their right minds smokes potpourri or incense? Second, it has not been tested by FDA or other drug administrators for consumption and therefore, it may be and probably is very harmful.

The website goes on to state some side-effects to this drug; such as, heart failure, anxiety, hallucinations, and vomiting. http://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/spice-synthetic-marijuana

The debating side states that it is okay to smoke because it isn’t “Illegal”. Well, white out, gasoline, glue, and nitrous oxide (the air in whip cream (propellant) are legal substances, but that doesn’t mean that they are safe to consume or inhale.

Let’s get smart about what we are putting into our bodies. Think before you consume…if it doesn’t sound good for you…then it probably isn’t. Getting high isn’t worth dying.

Is the Innocence Lost?

Is the Innocence Lost? I taught a class of first graders today. I don’t know if it is my imagination, but first graders today seem less innocent and sweet than they were five years ago. I remember the wonderful sight of watching my child at the age of six and seven, finding wonder in everything she came across. The simple act of reading a book, brought joy into her young eyes.

However, today, there seems to be something missing from those innocent eyes, that innocent voice, with our children today. They no longer seem so carefree, as I once remember them to be. It appears to be that our children are growing up faster and faster.

Please parents, teach our young ones to slow down and to enjoy life. Let them endeavor into playing in the trees, with dolls, and just being a kid. You only get one chance to be young and carefree, let them have it and have fun. By allowing them the freedom to be a kid, they will value the life given to them and can grow into healthy and happy adults….teaching their own children the same lesson, some day.

A Walk up Barrow Hill

A Walk up Barrow Hill…

The date is 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. The horror of the Salem Witch Hunt. So many innocent women and men were hung, burned to death, and crushed to death….until they finally took their last breath. It was a mass hysteria, brought on by a few young girls.

This event in history shows how an innocent accusation can cause such harm and to so many. Gossip and rumors can be related to such hysteria. Don’t gossip and don’t spread rumors…what is the old story? If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. Let’s keep the peace.

Happy Belated Mother’s Day to All Moms

Happy Belated Mother’s Day to All Moms….

What did you do for Mother’s Day? My daughters made me breakfast, bought me a card, balloons and made me a present from class. It was wonderful. We later went out on a nature hike and ate to sushi. Mother’s Day is a wonderful day that teaches our children the importance of giving, rather than always receiving.

It is important for all moms to spend quality time with their children and not only on Mother’s Day. We had a great time together bonding and also got to enjoy the great outdoors….even though it was 103 degrees this past Sunday.

Excerpt from Manuscript – Dear Paxton

Dear Paxton

The cold, long corridors, leading into the intensive care unit smelled of death, deeply depressing Cole, as he silently fought the demons within himself. He stared, hopelessly down at her lifeless body. She lay there too peacefully, while tightly secured underneath the sterile, white hospital sheets.

He hadn’t slept since the ambulance had arrived days before, frantically working to keep her fragile body alive. Cole had been informed that she had almost died, leaving him alone to raise their daughter, but miraculously, she had come through. She was stabilized for now, but still in critical condition.

The World as We See it.

The World as we see it…

Some of us spend our lives looking through rose-colored, shaded lenses. Some of us don’t wear any lenses at all. I guess you would call this an optimistic vs. pessimistic personality. As a child we see the good in people, but sadly we grow up, and depending on our own life experiences, we become tainted. The once perfect childhood thoughts become tarnished. We see people and life differently.

My youngest daughter is teaching me not to judge “the book by the cover”. She makes me smile when she gets frustrated with me for not giving a dollar or two to the local bum hanging out at McDonald’s, asking for money for food. Being the synical adult, I stick up my nose and assume the money will be used towards alcohol or drugs.

Is it my place to judge? Not really. I can chose not to give the money to him or her, but is it really going to effect my life that much if I don’t help? Would it not be more beneficial to give him or her a dollar, freely and without judgement. It can only make you feel like you were doing your part, by helping out society.

We may look down our noses at the “bums” of the world and think that we are so much better than them, but are we? Most of us our only a paycheck away from poverty. Losing your job, and then your car and then your home and then your family and then your self-respect, isn’t only likely, but is happening to thousands and maybe even millions today. These, once elite individuals, may be your neighbors or maybe even you.
