A MONSTER UNDER MY BED

11-21

Sometimes, as I sit in class, surrounded by other kids just like me, I close my eyes…letting my thoughts take me to a better a place.

A place where I can be myself and not pretend to be somebody I’m not. A place free of judgments. I like it here…I feel safe.

Suddenly, I’m startled out of my trance by the bell. My peers hurry out the door.

Slowly I drag myself out of my seat, grabbing my backpack…I think, “It’s just another day as a high school teenager.”

A Monster Under My Bed

img_3457

I tell her I’m getting better…well I was getting better.

Is it a lie when you want it to be true, but some how you fail, is it?

I tell her it will be okay, as I lay in my bed, late at night, gently rubbing my finger tips over the scars.

She asks me why I do it…I told her emotional pain is heavier on the soul than physical.

She just looked at me with a blank stare.

I knew she didn’t understand.

That’s okay…I understand.

THE MONSTER UNDER MY BED

arcata-ca-july-2016-084

No one will believe me…I tell myself, as I try to drift off to sleep.

But sleep doesn’t come easy to me these days. I lay here in the dark, wondering if I would be happier, if I wasn’t me.

This is silly, I tell myself. I have people who love me. My mom loves me, but sometimes it feels as if she doesn’t understand me. But then again…what adult does truly understand a teenage mind.

One or two? I take that back. Zero.

Depression surrounds me, but I must not let it draw me in. I’m really trying, but there are days when I wonder if it is enough.

MONSTER IN MY CLOSET
08.20.2016 - Arcata CA July 2016 025

It was late. The sun had disappeared hours ago, casting a light glow from the moonlight, across the alley.

She wasn’t scared, but she was feeling the first signs of doubting herself. She knew better than being out in the night late and alone. Her mother had taught her the dangers of the city over and over again…so why was she not listening, especially now.

Because she had a gentle soul… a caring soul… she trusted people. She hated when her mother looked down on people, always judging them. Why was she always judging? After all, people were good… weren’t they?

Perhaps this was true or maybe it’s just from the mind of a thirteen year old girl.

Lost in her own thoughts, she didn’t hear the footsteps sneaking up behind her. Seconds before, she had decided to turn around and go home… consumed with her mother’s voice in her head.

“Hello.”

But it was too late. He stood there, in front of her, staring down at her, as if she were his prey.

All the blood drained from her face, as her breath caught in her throat.

“Shit!” Was all she could think to say.

NO TLC

Kalaheo, Kauai, HI 11.2016

I’m like a flower.
You picked me
and you loved me,
but after a while,
you forgot to water me
and I was dying, literally,
for you to come back.
To give me some water,
but I started wilting…
and you finally noticed
that you forgot about me,
but now, though,
I was lifeless, dead.
So you threw me away.

Finding Your Child’s Talents:

Ms Mandi Photo 1

How do we know as parents when are child or children are really talented in something or just lucky?  Isn’t it odd how some children are just born with the nack of being able to draw portraits or play a musical instrument?  Do we ever question this or just go about our normal lives as if it were a perfectly natural occurrence.

The scientific study to this fascinating phenomena is called genetics.  Of course our children are born with a part of us and our spouse, but sometimes a genetic trait will be picked up from a far away, remote relative we have never met.  This would explain why a child would become an artist at a young age when neither parent has an ounce of artistic ability, not even in their pinky finger.

It is still amazing and amazes me an a daily basis.  Watching a young child, sitting contentedly in her chair with a drawing tablet on her lap and a pencil in her hand, drawing a replica of Mary Cassatt.    And a darn good replica I may add.  For all of you that may not be familiar with the paintings of Mary Cassatt….. she is widely known for her work of painting and drawing portraits of woman with children and / or children with animals.  Not an easy task by any means.

Find your child’s talents, encourage their dreams, and let them play around with their ideas.  You may be happily surprised to find that your average child may be anything but average, growing up to be another Mary Cassatt.

Why are our Children Cutting?

Why are our Children Cutting?

Any mother’s worst nightmare is founding out that your child is cutting themselves. I say child and not teenager. Cutting is not just a teenage problem, but younger and younger children are starting the craze. How young? I know ten-year old girls that have been cutting themselves.

Parents….we must be aware that this may be happening in your home and with your own children. No child is protected from this horrible situation. It happens to children from poor family environments to affluent families with the mother and father still in the home. The epidemic does not discriminate. It has no prejudice. It is happening more and more each day.

Ten years old is about 5th grade – 6th grade aged peers. Seriously? What does a 10-year-old have to stress about? But they do. It is sad, but real. Peer pressure plays a heavy part in it. Other factors may apply; such as a sense of isolation, pressures to be perfect, and depression.

Parents….read and look at your children’s text messages, e-mails, SnapChats, InstaGram, Kik, ect. Don’t think that your child does not fall into this category of “cutting”. It is happening and in our media. Children have too many resources to connect with people who they think “care” and are there to listen to their insecurities and fears. When you are 10 years old or 11 years old, you trust people who seem to care. But in reality , who are these people that our children our connecting with and talking to about their utmost secrets and insecurities? They pretend to be their friends, their peers, their same age groups, but really? Who really knows who is sitting behind that text message or computer typing words of endearments and concern….it may be the pedophile on the Amber Alert.

It is wrong to say the least, but we as parents, can not pretend it doesn’t exist…it does exist and we must put a stop to it. Parents…if you find that your child is using their phones, computers, and iPods inappropriately…take them away. We lived without this technology and they can live without it too. It isn’t worth the price of losing our children to this epidemic of cutting to “technology”.

Here is a great website that I found. It is simple and to the point on this horrific subject matter, called cutting.

What is Spice?

Drugs, Marijuana, Potpourri, Spice, Teenagers

What is Spice? I have heard some talk about this new “synthetic marijuana”. Let me first say, I am completely anti-marijuana and anti any drug. I have known close friends that have fallen into terrible addictions caused by marijuana and other harder types of drugs. So, when I heard about this drug called Spice, I decided to do some research.

First off, it is basically just potpourri or incense. Who in their right minds smokes potpourri or incense? Second, it has not been tested by FDA or other drug administrators for consumption and therefore, it may be and probably is very harmful.

The website goes on to state some side-effects to this drug; such as, heart failure, anxiety, hallucinations, and vomiting. http://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/spice-synthetic-marijuana

The debating side states that it is okay to smoke because it isn’t “Illegal”. Well, white out, gasoline, glue, and nitrous oxide (the air in whip cream (propellant) are legal substances, but that doesn’t mean that they are safe to consume or inhale.

Let’s get smart about what we are putting into our bodies. Think before you consume…if it doesn’t sound good for you…then it probably isn’t. Getting high isn’t worth dying.
